What has the Broncos’ win against Bennett’s Dragons got to do with corporate culture?

Ex Bronco “Big Dell” (Wendell Sailor) covers his embarassment at being comprehensively beaten out wide by Broncos’ big unit Dave Taylor, by gushing about Taylor’s legend-in-the-making skills.

Here’s the interesting bit for your business or organisation though:  Dell said (SM, 23/08/09, p. 98), “The Broncos have built a culture on people writing them off ... but clearly their belief in each other is intact and it will be tough to stop them now.” (emphasis added)

It seems that Sailor gets the importance of culture for winning performances. Speaking about the threat to his team’s competition-leading position Dell enthused, “I know we have the culture to achieve as much as any team in the comp. ... We are a team determined to work for each other to get back in the winners’ circle ... I know we have the self-belief and the talent to be there when the whips are cracking.”

This is the code to Bennett’s super-coach mojo. Yeah, game strategy is there; yeah, skill has to be there too - but all NRL teams have got that! Bennett works at culture ... relentlessly! And that culture is underpinned by powerful beliefs driven by even more powerful values.

Even more importantly, Bennett is aligned personally with the values he advocates. He walks the talk! There is no inconsistency. Voice equals touch. What you see is what you get.

Footnote: Bennett’s time at the Broncos coincided with the service of the giant little gentleman Cyril Connell - a close personal friend of Bennett. Their key values were closely aligned and contributed through recruitment, mentoring, leadership and coaching to the indominatable winning record of the Broncos corporate culture for 21 years.
